Director & Chartered Surveyor
Ian Smith FCABE, MRICS, MCMI
Ian holds over 40 years experience within the Building Control environment including major state-of-the-art projects, as well as in a broader senior managerial role.
Ian is a Member of the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors, a Fellow of the Association of Building Engineers and a Member of the Chartered Management Institute. He has worked with peer groups such as the London District Surveyors Association, international clients, Council Members and Government Ministries and been invited to speak at seminars including at the British Research Establishment. Ian has been widely published in Surveying magazines and journals including the RICS, LABC and ABE.
Having worked within six diverse local authority areas his expertise crosses the full spectrum of projects both large and small, rural and inner city. He is a specialist at delivering compliance that requires thinking outside the box and negotiating between other statutory services such as the Fire Authority. He attained the position of Head of Building Control at L.B.Newham and latterly the Head of the specialist team delivering both the Westfield Shopping City and the Athletes Village at Stratford. His negotiating skills between Council Members and officers, Government Offices, members of the Olympic Delivery Authority and London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games & Paralympics as examples, are invaluable.
By working as an integral part of the design team Ian believes solutions can be found and implemented at an early stage reducing exposure to risk and cost over-runs. He believes passionately in an holistic approach with cross discipline working to provide a level of service previously unattainable. These skills developed and honed within a local government framework that resulted in new ways to assist clients and deliver projects, are a fundamental part of Settle & Green’s approach providing a unique service and expertise to our clients
