About Us

Company structure

Settle & Green is a multidiscipline, design lead Architect Practice specialising in Residential New Builds and Extensions.  The three Directors each lead their own areas of specialism in Architecture, Building Control and Planning & Conservation; and work in combination as projects cross the boundaries of their expertise. We specialise in both cutting edge contemporary design as well as heritage projects working on a diverse range of houses from Listed Buildings to New Eco Homes.

What’s in a name?


Verb: To become established, to come to rest, to take up residence, to make firm, steady, or stable; to establish;

Last name: A placename of Anglo-Saxon origin derived from the Olde English pre 7th Century “setl”, meaning, dwelling, or abode.


Verb: To become or make green. Designed to protect the environment or to limit damage to the environment.

Last Name: Of pre 7th century origin derived from the word “grene” and is topographical for a person resident by a green or symbolic for sustainability of nature.


The Practice is an RIBA Chartered Practice and is Green Register Accredited. Each Director also individually holds professional memberships for their specialist areas demonstrating their continuing commitment to best practice and sustainability through good design and planning, heritage and conservation whilst remaining at the cutting edge of construction design and technology.

Who We Are

Director & Chartered Architect

Alan Smith, AA dip ARB RIBA, read Architecture at the Architects Association and has extensive experience in high-end residential, and commercial projects. With expertise in sustainable design he is an accredited member of the Green Register.

Director & Chartered Planner

Sue Smith, Dip. TP, RTPI, Grad. Dipl.Cons.(AA), IHBC, is a Conservation Planner with 42 years experience within the Local Authority environment in the Town Planning discipline with a specialism in Historic Buildings, Areas, Landscapes and Archaeology.

Director & Chartered Surveyor

D Ian Smith, FBEng. MRICS, MCMI has 44 years experience predominantly within Local Government in the Building Control environment including responsibility for major and State-of-the Art projects as well as a broader senior managerial role.
